Get involved in student clubs and activities
If you want to take advantage of the full Sun Devil experience, we encourage you to get involved. ASU has a very active extracurricular involvement program with various opportunities through clubs, community service, leadership, student government and more. Plus, in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences you can join a club or research initiative to meet students with similar interests as you.
ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN IN MATHEMATICS AT ASU STUDENT CHAPTER (AWM AT ASU)
The Association for Women in Mathematics at Arizona State University (AWM at ASU) is a student-run organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in mathematics. We are a group of undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, and faculty who have come together to create and foster a strong community around women interested in mathematics. Our club is a student chapter of the national Association for Women in Mathematics whose mission is to create a community in which women and girls can thrive in their mathematical endeavors, and to promote equitable opportunity and treatment of women and others of marginalized genders and gender identities across the mathematical sciences. The AWM Student Chapter is open to and welcomes everyone. Join the AWM club via SunDevilSync. Follow AWM at ASU on Instagram.
GAMMA IOTA SIGMA KAPPA CHAPTER (GIS AT ASU)
The Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS@ASU) Kappa Chapter (GIS at ASU) is an international fraternity chapter at ASU. The purpose of this fraternity is to promote, encourage, and sustain student interest in insurance, risk management, and actuarial science as professions; to encourage the high moral and scholastic attainments of its members; and to facilitate interaction of educational institutions and industry through networking and by fostering research activities, scholarship, and improved public relations.
As members of the club, students have an opportunity to hear from actuaries at varying levels from both local and national actuarial firms. At club meetings, actuarial professionals share information about their respective companies and provide helpful employment advice. In addition to meeting with prospective employers, members will also participate in career-building activities, such as resume reviews and interview preparation. These activities help prepare actuarial students for summer internships and ultimately full-time employment.
The GIS at ASU Chapter also helps organize the annual career day each fall in September, which brings together potential employers with students.
MORE CLUB
MORE is the Mathematical Organization for Rehumanizing Education. MORE is an ASU club devoted to discussing articles primarily related to the racist structures in mathematics education and research, with a goal of constructing concrete practices to promote anti-racism in the SOMSS. Join MORE via Sun Devil Sync.
DEVIL DATA SCIENCE
Devil Data Science is an organization that desires to help people understand the world better through data. The club seeks to accomplish this goal through two primary methods. First, the club provides technical workshops that allow students to enhance their skill levels with critical data science tools such as Python. Additionally, the organization brings in interesting guest speakers that work in this field at ASU or in an external role, as everyonehas much to learn from those who are more experienced. Join Devil Data Science via Sun Devil Sync.
SOCIETY FOR INDUSTRIAL AND APPLIED MATHEMATICS STUDENT CHAPTER AT ASU (SIAM AT ASU)
An interdisciplinary community based on the active exchange of ideas in industrial and applied mathematics, aiming to generate interest and promote research in the field while building a network with local industries and researchers in academia. Join SIAM at ASU via Sun Devil Sync.
MATHEMATICS TOMORROW
Mathematics Tomorrow strives to create a community of students who enjoy solving mathematical problems in a variety of areas, and want to strengthen their creative mathematical skills, and their skills at doing mathematical proofs. A secondary goal of this organization is to help interested students prepare for the William Lowell Putnam Undergraduate Mathematics Competition (see more below), which is an annual national mathematics competition held every December. Any full-time undergraduate who does not yet have a college degree is eligible to participate in the exam. Join Mathematics Tomorrow via Sun Devil Sync.
STEMATHEMATICS
STEMathematics hosts seminars aimed at introducing higher mathematics to mathematically capable people outside pure math and lower division math students. Join STEMathematics via Sun Devil Sync.
SOCIETY FOR ADVANCEMENT OF CHICANOS/HISPANICS AND NATIVE AMERICANS IN SCIENCE (SACNAS AT ASU)
The SACNAS student chapter at ASU is committed to promoting diversity in the STEM field, providing a network of like-minded peers, building professional development and leadership skills, engaging in the community, and informing members of opportunities that will help them achieve their goals. We invite you to take part in the all-inclusive SACNAS community of diverse individuals - from all educational, career, and leadership stages; all fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); and all ethnic backgrounds, genders, religions, sexual orientations, and abilities.
Other organizations of interest
The Society for Women in STEM is a partner organization of the Central Arizona Chapter of AWIS. The mission of this organization is to encourage networking among graduate and undergraduate students from different STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) disciplines and offer professional development to promote the advancement of women in science.
The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is an annual mathematics competition for undergraduate college students enrolled at institutions of higher learning in the United States and Canada. It is widely considered to be the most prestigious university-level mathematics examination in the world, and its difficulty is such that the median score is often zero or one (out of 120) despite being attempted by students specializing in mathematics. The exam has been offered annually since 1938 and is administered by the Mathematical Association of America. The Putnam Competition is held on the first Saturday of December each year. To prepare for the exam, you can join the Mathematics Tomorrow Seminar (see club info above), try problems from old exams, or attend the Problem-Solving Seminar MAT 194, 294, 394, 494. To sign up, contact one of ASU's Putnam coaches: Zilin Jiang.
OUT IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (oSTEM)
Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (oSTEM) is a national society dedicated to educating and fostering leadership for LGBTQIA communities in the STEM fields. The national society has been built by students, for students.
