Charles Wexler Mathematics Prize
This student award recognizes an outstanding undergraduate mathematics major each academic year who is at a higher level in the program and therefore a more mature mathematics student. The selection is made by the Awards Committee based on faculty recommendations.
Dean's Medal
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences recognizes its highest achieving students from the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities divisions. Each department and school within The College selects an outstanding student who demonstrated a steadfast commitment to academic excellence during their time at ASU. These students are awarded a prestigious Dean’s Medal in honor of their scholastic achievements.

Scholarships listed below are awarded starting in fall 2025.
Boggess Family Foundation Scholarship in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
$1,000 estimated award amount
Applicants must:
- be a full-time student (at least 12 hours), unless mitigating circumstance
- be a student with a major in one of the degree programs offered by the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
- be at least a sophomore
- have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater
- Donor representatives prefer students with financial need as determined by ASU Financial Aid and Scholarship Services.
The Compassion and Empowerment Scholarship
$1,000 estimated award amount
Applicants must:
- be a student with a major in one of the degree programs offered by the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
- be a junior or senior or graduate student
- be a half-time student (at least 6 hours), however donor has preference for full-time student (at least 12 hours0
- have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater, but donor has preference for cumulative GPA greater than 3.0
- Demonstrated finanacial need (completed FAFSA) is NOT required
- Donor prefers student submits statement that shares their story of overcoming life challenges and adversity and helping others in similar challenging situations.
John Olson Scholarship
$1,000 estimated award amount
This scholarship provides an opportunity for students with a financial need and potential in the area of math and statistics and related fields to carry on the legacy of John Olson. Applicants must:
- be enrolled in an academic degree in mathematics, statistics, or a related field for which there is the most need of financial assistance. Donor has a preference for students pursuing statistics, mathematics education, data science, computational mathematical sciences, or similar degrees.
- be a junior or senior
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- demonstrate documented financial need
- be a U.S. citizen
Jack H. Hawes Memorial Mathematics Research Scholarship
$2,800 estimated award amount
This scholarship encourages students to pursue faculty directed mathematics research. Applicants must:
- be a full-time (at least 12 credit hours) undergraduate student majoring in mathematics
- be participating in a research project under the direction of a tenure-track faculty member of the school (list name on application)
- be a resident of Arizona with documented financial need
- upload research document to application
Ioana Elise Hociota !!! Memorial Mathematics Scholarship
$1,700 estimated award amount
This merit-based scholarship for exemplary undergraduate students who have a passion for mathematics and have an immigrant or international background, was established by her husband, family and friends as a tribute to Ioana. Applicants must:
- be enrolled in the BA or BS Mathematics degree programs in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
- have a minimum academic level of sophomore
- be a half-time student (6 credit hours), with a preference for a recipient who is a full-time (12 credit hours) student
- have a cumulative GPA greater than 2.0, with a preference for a recipient whose cumulative GPA is greater than 3.0
- have an immigrant or international background and have come to the U.S. to pursue their passion (add to personal statement)
- be a naturalized U.S. citizen, pursuing U.S. citizenship, or be an international student
André Levard Mackey Scholarship
$800 estimated award amount
This scholarship aims to promote the benefits and educational values of diversity in the student body at ASU. Applicants must:
- have an interest in computers and an appreciation of their role in contemporary mathematics
- be a declared mathematics major in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
- be at the junior or senior level
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
Joaquin Bustoz Memorial Scholarship
$1,600 estimated award amount
This scholarship is offered in partnership with the Joaquin Bustoz Math-Science Honors program, a summer program to promote mathematics to underrepresented high school students. Applicants must:
- be a full-time (at least 12 credit hours) undergraduate student, majoring in mathematics
- have successfully completed the Joaquin Bustoz Math-Science Honors summer program (list years on application)
- be a resident of Arizona
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
Mercer Women in Actuarial Sciences Scholarship
$800 estimated award amount
This scholarship is provided by Mercer's Government and Human Services Consulting practice which embodies a commitment to enhancing the public sector through innovative solutions and expert guidance, reflecting a spirit of collaboration and service. Their work with state agencies began in 1985 with the state of Arizona. Mercer GHSC aims to empower the next generation of actuaries who will contribute to the sustainability and effectiveness of public health care programs. By investing in aspiring actuaries, Mercer GHSC seeks to alleviate financial barriers that may hinder their educational pursuits and career advancement. This initiative will foster a diverse talent pool equipped with the analytical skills and ethical standards necessary to address complex challenges in public finance, ultimately driving positive change in communities across the nation. Applicants must:
- be full-time junior, senior or graduate actuarial science student
- demonstrate financial need as determined by ASU Financial Aid and Scholarship Services
- maintain 3.0 or above cumulative GPA
- be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- (Preference for students who have passed at least one professional actuarial exam)
GPWA Actuarial Sciences Scholarship
$800 estimated award amount
This scholarship is provided by GPW and Associates. The demand for young actuaries is at an all-time high. GPWA anticipates this scholarship will help ASU continue to attract and retain the best talent in its actuarial programs. Recognizing the significant time commitment required to complete the program, prepare for actuarial exams, and effectively engage with the community, GPWA hopes the added financial support will help students excel in all these areas Applicants must:
- be enrolled in the Actuarial Science BS or MS program
- be a full-time undergraduate at junior level or higher or graduate student
- be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- be a resident of Arizona
- Donor has preference for studens who have passed at least one professional actuarial exam administered by SOA or CAS
- Donor has preference for students who are active members of a student organization that enhances the academic and actuarial communicty at ASU (i.e. Actuary Club at ASU or GIS Chapter, etc.) and participates in SOA or CAS case study competitions
- Donor has preference for students with cumulative GPA of at least 3.25
Richard Bessen Scholarship Gift
Up to $2500 estimated award amount
Richard Bessen (1962-2016) was a veterinary biologist and one of the foremost authorities in the research of prion diseases, such as Mad Cow Disease. A lover of good food and wine, music and the arts, community service and the great outdoors, Richard also took great pride in the mentorship and advancement of young, aspiring students of the sciences.
To further advance Richard’s encouragement of dedicated students, this scholarship in Richard’s memory provides financial support for first-generation undergraduate and graduate students, as they near the completion of their formal education and prepare to begin their professional careers.
For each student who accepts this scholarship, the goal is to promote the student’s increased involvement with both community service and ASU-supported associations for aspiring actuarial professionals, while still in school.
The scholarship recipients shall meet the following criteria:
- be within 4 semesters of graduating with either a graduate or undergraduate degree in actuarial science in the School of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences
- be a full-time first-generation college student
- be a U.S. citizen or lawful legal resident
- Donor has preference for students who have demonstrated a commitment to community service
Edrington Family Actuarial Scholarship
$800 estimated award amount
This scholarship is provided by the Edrington family to support students who are interested in actuarial studies who are also working to improve themselves and those in the broader ASU community. The primary goal of the scholarship is to raise awareness and reduce barriers to the actuarial profession for students demonstrating interest, need, and community engagement. Kyle Edrington is the Managing Director of Edrington Health Consulting, a Health Management Associates company. He began his actuarial journey as a member of GIS at ASU and feels it is important to cultivate opportunities and continue to support the local community and the actuarial profession. Applicants must:
- be full-time first or second year actuarial science students
- be active members of GIS at ASU (or similar actuarial club)
- demonstrate support to enhance actuarial and academic community at ASU (i.e., participate in SOA or CAS case study competitions, internships, attend student conferences, etc.)
- demonstrate commitment to actuarial profession by completing actuarial courses
- (No minimum GPA requirement)
- (Preference for students with financial need and/or underrepresented students)
Actuarial Strategies and Tactics Scholarship
$900 estimated award amount
Applicants must:
- be enrolled in the Actuarial Science BS or MS program
- be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at junior level or higher
- be an active member of a student organization that is involved with community service or supporting the actuarial field, such as GIS@ASU Chapter
- be a student committed to thinking critically about actuarial science, mathematical literacy, and societal competence
- Donor representatives prefer students who submit a statement that includes: their background, career goals, commitment to the community at large and to ASU specifically, commitment to the actuarial profession and why they’ve chosen this path, their positions, opinions, or thoughts regarding the place for the actuarial perspective in our society, both presently or in the future.
Kenneth and Sarah Levine Family Actuarial Scholarship
$1,000 estimated award amount
Ken Levine is vice president, chief financial officer, P&C Specialty Finance at Nationwide Insurance. In addition to his experience and leadership in the Property/Casualty insurance industry, Ken volunteers to help young people build a solid foundation for their futures. At ASU, this includes serving on an advisory board for the actuarial science degree program.
Ken and Sarah Levine believe deeply in the value of education. Their own experiences taught them that the cost can be a significant barrier to pursuing advanced education. Both of their children were born before Ken earned his fellowship from the Casualty Actuarial Society, so he knows firsthand the challenge of trying to balance the demands of a full-time job, a part-time job (to help "make ends meet"), a family, and studying for actuarial exams. With this scholarship, they hope to ease the burden for students who face circumstances that present unique challenges on their way to an actuarial science degree at ASU. Applicants must:
- be enrolled in the Actuarial Science BS or MS program
- be a full-time undergraduate at junior level or higher or graduate student
- have a 3.25 or higher cumulative GPA
- be an active member of a student organization that is involved with community service or supporting the actuarial field (i.e. Actuary Club at ASU or GIS Chapter, etc.)
- Donor representatives may also be interested to know if students have financial need as defined by ASU Financial Aid and Scholarship Services
- Donor representatives may also be interested to know if students have non-traditional status or are members of an underrepresented student group
- Donor representatives prefer students who submit a statement that includes: biographical background, career goals, how scholarship will impact their academic future, commitment to the community at-large and to ASU specifically, and commitment to the actuarial profession in terms of passing exams, obtaining internships, and being an active member in an actuarial science related student organization
Optumas Actuarial Science Scholarship
$1,000 estimated award amount
Through this new scholarship, along with what the company hopes will be associated mentoring and internships, Optumas will help nurture our best and brightest ASU actuarial science scholars to positively impact this growing and necessary field. Applicants must:
- be enrolled in the Actuarial Science BS or MS program
- be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at junior level or higher
- have a 3.25 or higher cumulative GPA
- be a US citizen, or permanent resident of the U.S., or someone legally permitted to reside and work permanently in the U.S.
- be a resident of Arizona
- Donor representatives prefer students who have passed at least one professional exam
- Donor representatives prefer students who are active members of an actuarial science (or similar) student organization, such as Gamma Iota Sigma Chapter at ASU, as demonstrated by their volunteering for club events and setting an example for other members
- Donor representatives prefer students who submit a statement that includes: background, career goals, how scholarship will impact their academic future, commitment to the community at-large and to ASU specifically, and commitment to the actuarial profession in terms of passing exams, obtaining internships, and being an active member in an actuarial science related student organization (maximum two pages)
W.R. Berkley/Nautilus Insurance Analytics Scholarship
$800 estimated award amount
Analytical thinking exists in all facets of the business; from determining the risks related to a specific account, pricing and properly defining the policy terms for an account, ensuring the adequacy of the company’s overall rate levels, optimal claims handling to ensure fair and timely settlement for those who have experienced a loss, to having a strong understanding of its agency partners, the effectiveness of corporate marketing efforts, and even internal staff engagement.
Nautilus seeks to recognize a scholar that exhibits this skill set, and one that will continue to utilize this competency in their academic and professional work. Applicants must:
- be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
- be at the junior level or above or graduate student
- have a 3.25 or higher cumulative GPA
- be a US citizen, or legal permanent resident of the U.S.
- be a resident of Arizona
- Donor representatives have a preference for the award to go to a student pursuing a BS or MS in Actuarial Science in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, and is open to other students in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences being considered for scholarship support
- Additional selection factors shall include academic achievement (ASU GPA, actuarial exam progress etc.), student organization involvement (GIS Chapter, etc.), community involvement and leadership.
Nationwide E&S/Specialty Actuarial Science Scholarship
$1,000 estimated award amount
This scholarship from Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company supports the actuarial science program by developing a strong relationship with ASU's best and brightest students and by helping to shape the industry's future leaders. Applicants must:
- Be pursuing a BS or MS in Actuarial Science in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
- have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA
- be a US citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., and can work permanently in the U.S.
- Donor prefers a student who has taken a database management system class or will be enrolled in one the next semester
Robert G. Maule Actuarial Excellence Scholarship
$500 estimated award amount
This scholarship recognizes Actuarial Sciences undergraduate students for their excellence, and was established by Elaine Maule as a tribute to her husband. Robert was an actuary for 22 years with Milliman USA before he returned to ASU to earn his masters in mathematics. He was a member of the Society of Actuaries and earned F.S.A and M.A.A.A. credentials during his career as an actuary. Applicants must:
- be a full-time student (at least 12 hours) enrolled in the Actuarial Science BS program
- have demonstrated excellence in the actuarial sciences field, i.e. has passed one of the actuarial science national exams
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25
- Financial aid can be considered by is not required
- Donor prefers a student who has returned to school after working or is preparing to change careers
Actuarial Faculty Pioneers Scholarship
$1,300 estimated award amount
Founding faculty members of the ASU Actuarial Program (ACT) in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Al Boggess, May Boggess, Jelena Milovanovic, and Matt Hassett, are committed to identifying and nurturing talents of future actuarial science scholars. The school has been an important source of actuarial employees for Arizona insurance since 1994, and as of fall 2014 has a fully recognized BS degree providing opportunity for the school to collaborate with local industry on research in areas such as trend forecasting, predictive analytics, reserving, and pricing. Applicants must:
- be a full-time undergraduate at junior level or higher or graduate student
- be pursuing a BS or MS in Actuarial Science in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
- have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA
- be a US citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., or can work permanently in the U.S.
- be a resident of Arizona
- be an active member of an actuarial science (or similar) student organization, such as Gamma Iota Sigma Chapter at ASU
- Donor representatives prefer students who have passed at least one professional exam
- Donor representatives prefer students that submit a statement that includes: background, career goals, how scholarship will impact your academic future and commitment to the actuarial profession (maximum two pages)
Actuarial Science Scholarship
$500 estimated award amount
This scholarship will support travel awards to conferences or exam fees. Applicants must:
- be at the sophomore level or above or graduate student
- be a full-time student enrolled in the Actuarial Science BS or MS program
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5
- have passed at least one professional exam
- Actuarial Club or Gamma Iota Sigma membership is preferred
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Actuarial Scholar
$1,200 estimated award amount
This scholarship from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona was the first one established to support ASU's new actuarial science program which began in fall 2014. The program develops qualified graduates who demonstrate their preparation by earning professional actuarial credentials, thus enhancing the workforce at insurance companies and other organizations. In addition, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona encourages ASU to identify recipients who are underrepresented in actuarial science, to encourage diversity and opportunity in this profession. Applicants must:
- be an undergraduate or graduate student at the junior level or above
- enrolled as a full-time student in the Actuarial Science BS or MS program
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25
- be eligible to work in the United States
- Committee may consider financial need and underrepresentation of students at ASU
Tom and Zona Lorig Scholarship
$1,000 estimated award amount
This scholarship aims to help bridge the gap between the short supply of scholarships for mathematics and statistics and increasing need for quantitatively trained students critical for society as technology becomes more data driven. Because scholarship support and a strong work ethic were critical to their access to higher education, Tom and Zona Lorig have established this scholarship to benefit qualified students who face similar challenges of access today. Applicants must:
- be enrolled full-time (at least 12 hours) in an undergraduate degree with the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
- Although open to students in all undergraduate majors within School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, preference is given to those pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science
- have attained a minimum of 30 hours, including transfer credits
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
- be a U.S. citizen and resident of Arizona
- submit a statement, which will include your background, career goals, and how the scholarship will impact your academic future
- Committee may consider financial need
