DATAFEST 2023
Virtual 48-Hour Data Hackathon
March 24 - 26
Hosted in person on each campus and virtually for online students
Undergraduate students from any major at ASU, UArizona or NAU can participate in ASA DataFest 2023. It is being hosted locally on each university campus and virtually for online students this year. Teams of 2–5 students compete in a 48-hour virtual data hackathon. Employers love to see this kind of experience on student resumes. (Undergraduate students from ASU, NAU or UofA in any major can compete).
STUDENT PRE-REGISTRATION IS CLOSED. WE ARE AT FULL CAPACITY FOR 2023.
STUDENTS PRE-REGISTER BY SUNDAY, MARCH 5
Those pre-registering by Sunday, March 5, 2023 by 11:59 PM (AZ/MST) will be guaranteed a place in the competition. The final full registration form is forthcoming. Due to limitations on how many students can be accommodated, students not pre-registered will not be guaranteed a spot.
The American Statistical Association (ASA) DataFest is a nationally-coordinated undergraduate competition in which teams of undergraduates work around the clock to find and share meaning in a large, rich and complex data set. Previous years’ data sets have included crime data from the Los Angeles Police Department, dating data from eHarmony, energy use data from GridPoint and sales data from Ticketmaster. This year’s data set will be revealed at the opening of the event on Friday evening. At the conclusion of the competition, each team will have five minutes to make a presentation to our panel of judges. In addition to a Judges' Choice award, we will give awards such as Best Visualization, Best Insight and Best Use of External Data.
Learn Representatives from the local ASA chapter will present details and answer questions about the 48-hour data competition.
Analyze DataFest introduces you to what is likely the richest, most complex dataset you’ve seen so far in your undergraduate career. The dataset is provided by a real-life organization and is chosen to provide many avenues of discovery. Students at any stage of their data science education will find something of interest and will have the opportunity to make an original finding. Students from any major are welcome.
Network Mingle with data science professionals who visit DataFest to offer their advice and answer your questions. Many professionals find DataFest to be a great recruiting opportunity; they get to watch talented undergraduate students work under pressure in a team and examine their thinking process.
Experience Past participants of DataFest have gone to job interviews able to describe technical challenges overcome, explain how they work under time-pressure and talk about their thoughts on solving real-life data problems.
