The Celebration of Women in Mathematics is a joyful opportunity for the mathematical community to celebrate women in mathematics and others of marginalized genders and gender identities across the mathematical sciences.
The day is part of a new international initiative to inspire women everywhere to celebrate their achievements in mathematics, and to encourage an open, welcoming, and inclusive work environment for everybody. May 12 was the date originally chosen for this annual event, as it is the birthdate of Maryam Mirzakhani. Our school will be hosting our celebration on March 18, since May 12 is after ASU's spring semester ends.
Susan Friedlander will give a keynote lecture titled The Marquise du Chatelet: Aristocrat and Mathematician. She is a professor of mathematics at the University of Southern California and director of the Center for Applied Mathematical Sciences.
Priyam Patel will give an invited talk on Infinite-type Surfaces, an area of research close to that of Maryam Mirzakhani. Patel is an assistant professor at the University of Utah.
This year’s celebration will include a screening of the film Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani. The event will also include ‘Remember Maryam Mirzakhani’, an exhibition with 18 original posters. This exhibition opened at the (WM)², the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics in 2018. The day will also include graduate students giving bullet talks about their research projects, and a luncheon on the patio at Engrained in the Memorial Union.

The Celebration of Women in Mathematics is hosted by the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences and the Association for Women in Mathematics Student Chapter at ASU.
The mission of the Association for Women in Mathematics is to create a community in which women and girls can thrive in their mathematical endeavors, and to promote equitable opportunity and treatment of women and others of marginalized genders and gender identities across the mathematical sciences.
